Walnut Wood Carving Art of Kashmir

Kashmir is one of the few places in the world where high-altitude walnut trees grow. The Walnut Wood Carving (Doon Kul) is a revered ancient craft, known for intricate motifs of flora, fauna, and chinar leaves.

Understanding Walnut Wood Quality

The Root (Most Expensive)

Wood from the root is almost black in color. It is the hardest, most durable, and most expensive part of the tree. Artisans use root wood for the finest, most intricate carvings that take months to complete.

The Trunk (Standard Quality)

The trunk wood is lighter, featuring a rich brown color with beautiful natural grains. It is predominantly used for heavy furniture, folding screens, and larger decorative items.

The Branches (Budget)

Wood from the branches is the lightest in color and softest in texture. It is used for smaller souvenirs like keychains, small bowls, and budget-friendly decor.

The Crafting Process

The wood is first seasoned (dried) naturally for 1 to 3 years to prevent warping. Master artisans (Naqqash) then use specialized chisels to carve deep, 3D motifs. No nails are used in traditional Kashmiri furniture; pieces are assembled using complex interlocking joinery.
