KGL: The Most Beautiful Trek in India

The Kashmir Great Lakes Trek (KGL) is widely considered the crown jewel of Indian trekking. It is not just a walk in the mountains; it is a journey through a changing landscape of alpine meadows, rugged passes, and most importantly, seven spectacular high-altitude lakes that change color from turquoise to emerald as the sun moves across the sky. The Seven Sisters: The Lakes of KGL

1. Vishansar Lake: The 'Lake of Vishnu', the first major lake on the trek. It is famous for its abundance of trout.
2. Kishansar Lake: Located just above Vishansar, separated by a small meadow. The reflection of the peaks in this lake is magical.
3. Gadsar Lake: The 'Lake of Flowers', famous for the wildflower meadows that surround it.
4. Satsar Lakes: A cluster of seven small connected lakes in a rocky basin.
5. Gangabal & Nundkol Lakes: The twin lakes at the base of the mighty Harmukh peak. Gangabal is the largest and most sacred of the lakes.

Trek Difficulty & Best Time

The KGL is a moderate to difficult trek. You will be crossing several passes at an altitude of over 13,000 ft, including the Gadsar Pass. It requires a good level of physical fitness and stamina. The window for this trek is very short—from July to September—when the snow has melted and the meadows are in full bloom.
