Gulmarg Gondola Guide

Everything you need to know about the world's second-highest cable car.

Ascending the Apharwat: A Guide to the Gondola

The Gulmarg Gondola is the undisputed star attraction of the valley. Spanning two phases and reaching a staggering altitude of 13,780 feet, it offers a bird's eye view of the Pir Panjal range that is simply unparalleled. However, because of its popularity, booking and navigating the Gondola can be a challenge for first-time visitors. At Travel Etios Kashmir, we handle thousands of Gondola trips every year and have compiled this definitive guide to help you have a smooth ascent.

Understanding the Phases

  • Phase 1 (Gulmarg to Kongdori): This leg takes you from the main meadow (8,694 ft) to the Kongdori station (10,105 ft). It's a short 10-minute ride that takes you over beautiful pine forests. Most families and casual tourists spend their time here enjoying the snow and the mountain cafes.
  • Phase 2 (Kongdori to Apharwat Peak): This is the 'Extreme' leg. It takes you from Kongdori to the Apharwat Peak (13,780 ft), just a few kilometers from the Line of Control. This is the realm of clouds and deep snow. It is essential for skiers and those wanting to see the highest peaks of the Himalayas.

Booking Your Tickets in 2026

Crucial Update: Tickets are no longer sold at the counter. All bookings must be made online through the Official Gondola Website. Because slots are limited (especially for Phase 2), they often sell out 3-4 weeks in advance during peak season.

When you book a full Gulmarg Tour Package with us, our concierge team handles the entire booking process for you, ensuring you have your digital tickets ready before you even land in Srinagar.

Essential Tips for the Ride

  • Health Warning: Phase 2 is at a very high altitude. If you have heart or breathing issues, please consult with your doctor before ascending. We recommend spending at least 2 hours at Phase 1 to acclimatize before heading to Phase 2.
  • Dress in Layers: The temperature at the top can be 10-15 degrees lower than in the Gulmarg meadow. Even in summer, you will need a heavy jacket at Phase 2.
  • Timings: The Gondola usually operates from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, weather permitting. We recommend taking the earliest possible slot to avoid the afternoon crowds.
  • Beware of Touts: You do not need a 'guide' to take the Gondola. The path from the car park to the boarding station is clearly marked.
