Uncover the magic of the Himalayas with our elite travel services.
Located near the Line of Control (LOC), Gurez Valley was closed to tourists for decades. Today, it offers the most pristine, raw, and uncommercialized camping experience in Kashmir, guarded by the towering Habba Khatoon peak.
Getting to Gurez is an adventure in itself. The 6-hour drive from Srinagar takes you across the formidable Razdan Pass (11,600 ft). Because of its proximity to the border, the area is heavily guarded, and you will undergo multiple strict Army ID checks along the route.
The best camping spots are situated right on the banks of the crystal-clear Kishenganga River in Dawar. You can either pitch your own equipment or book premium Swiss Tents established by local vendors. The sound of the rushing river at night is mesmerizing.
Gurez is culturally distinct from the rest of Kashmir. The locals belong to the Dardic tribe and speak the unique Shina language. Note that the weather here is highly unpredictable; even in August, night temperatures drop drastically. The valley is completely cut off by snow from November to May.
